Mandala Design Workshop - Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Saturday, September 14 from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

 

Class Price: $33 + supplies

Shake up your routine with a creative challenge and experience the magic of Mandala Design using white ink on black paper. The strong contrast of this tonal reversal creates dynamic and original artworks with timeless appeal.

During this 3 hour workshop you’ll design an original hand drawn mandala using limited set of quality materials and discover which tools to use to get good results right from the start. Learn how to add variety to your designs and utilize techniques that help move you past creative blocks.

In this 3-hour workshop participants will:

  • create an original hand drawn mandala suitable for framing using simple geometry and a limited set of quality art materials;

  • utilize an ‘Artist’s Toolkit’ of best practices that will ensure good results right from the start & move you past creative blocks

Supply List: Participants are required to bring supplies as listed on the supply list. Approximate cost $10.

The instructor will supply a sheet of artist quality paper at a cost of $1/sheet, payable to the instructor in class. Additional sheets of artist quality paper is available at a cost of $1/sheet (limited quantities).

Linda Hook - Pen and Ink Teacher

Linda Hook @lindahookart is a Toronto based mixed media artist and arts facilitator who is passionate about Mandalas. Her artwork is inspired by

the Mandala as a metaphor for a good life filled with harmony, unity and balance.  Whether arising organically from her subconscious or by utilizing ancient symbols that transcend time and culture, each mandala is steeped in a process that invites focus, reflection and being present in the moment. In Linda’s art practice, the creative process is valued as much as the end product. A big believer in the role of creativity in well-being and as part of a self care program, Linda enjoys helping people discover their creative nature. Linda has taught & exhibited in Canada and the Caribbean and her work is part of private and public collections throughout the world.

 

Mixed Media Shadow Box Assemblage

Saturday, October 26 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm (includes lunch break)

 

Class Price: $55 + supplies

Construct a multi-dimensional collage showcasing the beauty and versatility of artist papers. In this 5 hour workshop we will use an assortment of Japanese papers including Japanese rayon tissue and chiyogami to create a multilayered paper sculpture nestled within a shadow box frame. Experiment with colour, texture and pattern as you cut, fold, weave, crinkle, crush, shape and layer these amazing papers to create your unique work of art. Add upscale finishing touches to your design using a variety of embellishments.

 

In this 5-hour workshop participants will:

  • use principles from the colour wheel to select a cohesive palette;

  • learn how to mix pattern and texture, when to “follow the rules” and when to trust your instincts;

  • translate & interpret design inspiration culled from diverse sources including nature, architecture, abstract art ,textiles and home decor into a multi-dimensional paper collage. 

Supply List: Participants are required to bring supplies as listed on the supply list. Approximate cost $25.

Additional Supply Fee payable to Linda Hook in class: $3/participant
There will be an assortment of artists’ papers suitable for your background support, foam adhesive mini circles (great for adding dimension) and additional types of adhesives for use in the workshop.

Perpetual Calendar Workshop - Pen & Ink with Acrylic Inks  

Saturday, November 9 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm (with lunch break)

Class Price: $44 + supplies

Life is busy and keeping track of special days can be a challenge. Join artist Linda Hook to create a perpetual calendar, a beautiful and everlasting one sheet reminder of birthdays and anniversaries of the special people in your life.

 

In this 4 hour workshop you will harness the fluid properties of acrylic inks to paint a star-studded galaxy as your central motif. After adding a pen and ink border, you will further embellish your design with “faux calligraphy”, a fun and easy way to achieve the look of modern calligraphy without special equipment

In this 4-hour workshop participants will:

  • create a beautiful organizational reference that also makes a great gift;

  • discover the fluid properties of acrylic inks;

  • utilize basic concepts to turn cursive handwriting into calligraphy.

 

Supply List: Participants are required to bring supplies as listed on the supply list. Approximate cost $15—18.

Additional Supply Fee payable to Linda Hook in class $5/participant

The instructor will supply a sheet of artist quality paper and a set of worksheets required to complete the workshop at a cost of $5/participant, payable to the instructor in class. Acrylic Inks to be used in the workshop will also be supplied. Additional sheets of artist quality paper are available at a cost of $1/sheet (limited quantities).
